Back to Team Teamwork

Team Teamwork is back with another video-game themed mashup album. This time all of the beats are from Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis games, including Super Mario, Sonic, Yoshi’s Island, Mortal Kombat, and more.

    Review:

Team Teamwork is back with his third videogame themed release, Super Nintendo Sega Genesis. With the title taken from Biggie’s classic, Team Teamwork abandons only one videogame series for a whole generation of games. The instrumentals are taken from a multitude of different 16-bit games.

The beats are well made and mixed. They’re heavy and thick, and definitely don’t have the problem of sounding amateur-ish like so many videogame mashups do. Unfortunately, this sounds them to sound a bit overpowering at times, but it’s better than the alternative. They also lack some of the nostalgia, the “haha, I remember this” moments of previous releases, but that’s probably due to my inexperience with many of these games than anything else.

The song choices are good, and are recognizable (or at least the Artist) to most listeners with at least moderate knowledge of hip hop. Team Teamwork seems to stick to mostly to the classics, which leads to a quality selection, but at the cost of many have being used before. Most are in such a different context that it’s not a problem, though.

This album is not a typical party mashup album, with a bunch of random pop hits put together. It’s closer to a concept album than anything, and is generally well done. It’s no Ocarina of Rhyme, but it’s a solid release from a talented DJ.

    Rating: 8.2/10
