Check In with Top Flight
After recently releasing a very successful album, The Print Shop, Top Flight is ready to release his new album, 47 Minutes of Fame. The album drops October 29th, and we got a chance to talk with Top Flight about the new release, as well as get an exclusive preview track.
What kind of genres can we expect to hear in the new album?
Genres, genres, genres. Well, I tried to sample music from lots of eras. 47 Minutes of Fame is pretty heavy in pop music and techno, but I took songs from a wide range of years. I like to think that there’s something for everyone in here.
Any samples you’re excited about including?
I’m so pumped to release a mashup of Caribou Lou by Tech N9ne. I absolutely love Tech, and I think that his stuff is way underrated, and way undermashed.
Does the album consist of A vs. B mashups or multi-sample tracks?
The album is interesting, the first half of the album is multi-sample and transitioning mixes, and the second half is A vs. B mashups. Like I said, something for everyone.
Favorite combination off the new album?
My favorite combination off the new mixtape is a tie between Teach Me How to Dougie by Cali Swag District vs Whatcha Say by Jason Derulo and Can I Get A… by Jay-Z vs Rudeboy by Rihanna. (SPOILER ALERT!!) Oh man though, I really like what I did with Passion Pit too. I really can’t decide.

How much time have you put into the new album?
The album has been in the works since the day I released The Print Shop. I get a new idea every day and immediately start it. I would say I’ve been making this for about 2 months.
Can you tell us a little bit about this exclusive preview track?
The exclusive track, “Uncrushable” is a mash of: Cali Swag District’s “Teach Me How to Dougie”, Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say”, Tech N9ne’s “Caribou Lou”, and Lynrd Skynrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama”. This track actually took me very little time to make, once I came up with the original idea it fell together very smoothly. “Uncrushable” was actually inspired by one of the first tracks I ever made. I had mashed Whatcha Say by Jason Derulo with Lollipop by Lil’ Wayne, just fiddling around with my high school buddy, Brian, dubbing the track “I Am The Chocolate Touch.” The track was released on my first ever pathetic attempt at an album, “The Trilogy”. The album has since been permanantly deleted from internet history; it was straight up bad. Haha. Mad kudos to anyone who can find “I Am The Chocolate Touch.” now. I wanted to remake it, and I had this sudden brainblast and thought “MMM WHATCHA DOUGIE?!?!” and ran with the idea. I added Caribou Lou with hopes of making one of the first mixes of the song, correct me if I’m wrong. I find that my best tracks are the ones that I randomly piece together in my head. I was pumped to hear the end result.
Where did you get inspiration for the samples and combinations you used?
I get a lot of inspiration at college. I get a lot of song recommendations from people in my dorm (hoorah Terry Hall!), my roommate, and my girlfriend. I like getting song request from fans, because then I get to make tracks that are all about the fans’ music, and I get to add in some of my own too.
Any other comments?
I’d like to think that 47 Minutes is going to top The Print Shop, but I guess that’s for everyone else to decide! Gotta thank my roommate Ryan Bedard aka 3OSS GFX (yeah, that’s pronounced boss) for being a huge supporter, and for making all my recent album art and promotional art in the Youtube channel. I’m pumped to release this, and I’m even more pumped to be here on What The Mashup!
